TROY – Raiph LeVan didn’t set a personal record on Friday at the Division III regional track and field championships, but he did enough to make sure he punched a ticket to the state meet next week.
LeVan, in his first year running track, finished second in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.49. The top four athletes or teams in each event moved forward to state.
Graham High School has named Shane Cahill as its new football coach.
A West Jefferson High School grad who played collegiate at Urbana, Cahill has spent the last three seasons as defensive coordinator at Mechanicsburg.
LEXINGTON —Three local athletes competed at the Divison II regional track and field preliminaries on Thursday.
Graham’s Tyler Powell qualified for Saturday’s finals in the 400 with a time of 50.86 – good enough for seventh. Powell was also slated to compete in the 200, but earned no time with a DNS.
Four West Liberty-Salem athletes signed to play collegiate sports on Tuesday.
Lily Yoder signed to play basketball at Bluffton University.

TROY – The West Liberty-Salem girls track and field team performed well in its Division III regional preliminary races on Wednesday, moving the 4×200, 4×100 and 4×400 squads into Friday’s finals.
In the 4×800 finals, West Liberty-Salem’s girls team of Reghan Bieleski, Grace Adams, Taylor Lauck and Payton Umphries finished sixth in 9:59.15. The boys team of Michael Conley, Jordan Lewis, Isaac Smith and Sam Strickland finished 14th in 8:53.58.
DAYTON – Bishop Ready took advantage of some hard-hit balls and a few mistakes by West Liberty-Salem to down the Tigers, 4-2, in a Division III softball regional semifinal at Wright State on Wednesday.
“We definitely beat ourselves. We weren’t disciplined like we normally are. I think the nerves got the best of some of the girls,” WL-S Coach Kenleigh Farris said. “We definitely took ourselves out of the game and some opportunities. I wish we could have some of those innings back, but we’re just going to have to learn from it. Especially the underclassmen – take this and move forward with it next year.”
Congratulations to the following Champaign County Student-Athletes on these honors.

The West Liberty-Salem Tigers have made mincemeat of pretty much everyone they’ve played in the last month, and Coach Kenleigh Farris’ squad looks to continue that trend when the Tigers take on Bishop Ready on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a regional semifinal.
The game will take place at Wright State University, but that stage is unlikely to rattle the Tigers, who have been beating the cover off the ball and playing great defense – a winning combination, for sure.
Area athletes will be taking to the track and field for regional competition this week, with a state berth waiting for any able to seize the opportunity.
Urbana and Graham will compete in Division II at Lexington beginning on Thursday, with a trio of boys in action
